Sustainably sourced from fallen Hudson Valley trees

We call our furniture "semi-custom" because we allow the wood to tell us what it wants to be.

We source our wood from fallen trees, which develop interesting imperfections and battle scars like spalting, the natural discoloration created by fungi. Spalting is highly valued for its beauty.

Until we start working with a piece of wood, we don't know exactly how it will turn out. We can create a piece to your general specifications such as size but we ask that you allow the wood itself to determine the look of the final piece.

Frequently asked questions

What would you like to know about live edge furniture?

The basics

What is live edge furniture?

Live edge furniture is a type of furniture that preserves the natural edge of the wood along the sides of the piece. Instead of trimming the edges to create a straight and uniform look, the live edge approach keeps the original contours of the tree. This means you can see the natural lines, knots, and sometimes bark on the edges of tables, shelves, or other pieces. It's a design style that celebrates the raw and organic beauty of the wood, providing a unique and rustic appearance to the furniture.

Cost

Why is live edge furniture expensive?

The combination of unique materials, skilled craftsmanship, customization, limited availability, specialized drying processes, artistic value, and environmental considerations all contribute to the higher cost of live edge furniture.

Style

Is live edge still in style?

We would say that it definitely is. Any design that leans heavily on natural elements tends to stand the test of time. Also, interior design continues to trend toward incorporating natural elements and a rustic aesthetic. The unique and organic look, showcasing the natural edges of wood, adds a touch of warmth and character to both modern and more traditional spaces.

Our pieces in particular lean into the natural look of the wood. We don't use brightly colored epoxies or shiny finishes, which can look somewhat unnatural and are more likely to date themselves.

Cost

What is a good price for live edge wood?

Price is based on species of wood, length and thickness of the piece or pieces, quality of wood, treatments such as kiln drying, cost of resin for poured slabs, sourcing and sustainability, and location.

As an example, if you're sourcing wood from a nearby Hudson Valley mill, you can buy a 9 foot by 18 inch red oak slab for $250. But a black walnut slab of the same size would be $700.

Our wood slabs are individually sourced from fallen trees and most require extensive finishing due to their age and various battle scars. We think these pieces are the most unique and interesting, making them well worth the extra cost.

Care

Does live edge wood need to be sealed?

We recommend sealing, and we seal our pieces to stabilize them and protect them from moisture, scratching and cracking.
