Nature guides our design process. Each piece of furniture begins with carefully selected wood from fallen trees, and these trees tell their own stories through unique markings, grain patterns, and natural characteristics like spalting - where fungi create striking dark lines and patterns in the wood.
While we can craft pieces to meet your size requirements and general design preferences, the wood's inherent character shapes the final aesthetic. This collaboration between artisan and material means each piece develops its own personality during creation.
It's this respect for the wood's natural features that makes our process unique - we don't force the material into predetermined designs, but rather let its distinctive qualities shine through.

Our clients Lexy and Mike wanted a chunky rustic wall-mounted bench for their foyer. We created an extra thick slab bench from rare rainbow poplar (shown here on top of our coffee table). They paired the rustic bench with more traditional wallpaper for their stylish mudroom makeover.

The basics
A live edge bench preserves the tree's natural outer surface along one or more edges, creating a striking contrast between polished craftsmanship and organic form. Unlike conventional furniture with straight-cut sides, these benches incorporate the tree's authentic contours, allowing you to see where bark once grew. Each bench tells its own story through organic curves, distinct wood grain, and natural features that developed during the tree's life. This style of furniture transforms the tree's raw character into functional art, making every piece impossible to duplicate.
Cost
A live edge bench is an affordable way to try out a modern rustic style in your home. Although they are relatively easy to make, compared to say a dining table, they do require equipment, skill and space to dry. Cracks and spalting also may need filled or reinforced with epoxy. So, while you might be able to DIY one, it may not be worth the time and expense to do yourself.

Style
We would say yes. Take a look at any major furniture retailer and you'll see organic-style wood benches.
Any design that leans heavily on natural elements tends to stand the test of time. Also, interior design continues to trend toward incorporating natural elements and a rustic aesthetic. The unique and organic look, showcasing the natural edges of wood, adds a touch of warmth and character to both modern and more traditional spaces.
Our pieces in particular lean into the natural look of the wood. We don't use brightly colored epoxies or shiny finishes, which can look somewhat unnatural and are more likely to date themselves.
Cost
The price of a live edge bench varies widely depending on several key factors:
Size: A small 3-foot bench might start around $500, while a large 8-foot bench could range from $2,000 to $5,000+
Quality and Type of Wood: Common hardwoods like maple or oak typically cost less than exotic or rare woods like walnut or redwood burl. Unique characteristics like spalting, figured grain, or unusual coloring can increase the price.
Craftsmanship: Custom-made benches from skilled artisans typically cost more than mass-produced pieces. Hand-finished details, unique joinery, and custom base designs add to the price.
A general price guide:
Keep in mind that extremely low prices (under $400) often indicate lower quality materials or mass production, while higher prices typically reflect superior craftsmanship, premium materials, and unique design elements.
Care
We seal our benches with a clear satin water-based polyurethane or with clear epoxy.
